Obituary of Robert Edward Mero

SFC (Retired) ROBERT"SARGE" MERO, 82, of Jefferson, Wisconsin passed away peacefully into the arms of his precious Savior on Wednesday, November 13th at Rainbow Hospice Care of Johnson Creek. "Bob" was born in Iron River, Wisconsin to Sanford & Esther (Herman) Mero. He graduated from Livingston, Wisconsin High School (Class of 1949) and Madison Area Technical College Watertown, Wisconsin. He retired in 1989 as an Unemployment Compensation Adjudicator for the State of Wisconsin. A proud career soldier, he served his country in the United States Navy (4 years), United States Army (10 years), Wisconsin Army National Guard (18 years) and United States Army Reserve (7 years) retiring in 1991. During his military career he served two combat tours in Korea and a combat tour in Vietnam where he was wounded in 1969. Among his many military decorations he received a Purple Heart, The Army Commendation Medal and The Army Achievement Medal - he was a proud Citizen Soldier for this country! Bob married Judith "Judy" (Lang) in 1960 at Saint John's Lutheran Church in Jefferson (WELS) and the happy couple celebrated their 53rd anniversary this last spring. She unselfishly learned many medical procedures in order to care for him in their home even while she herself was battling breast cancer, lovingly supported by her children to show their parents how much they love them. Together they went on to raise a daughter (Teri) and a son (Tim) and built a home next door to his children's' maternal grandparents' home, as he wanted them surrounded by the love of family, especially when his military service took him away from home. He never failed to tell his family how much he loved them and how proud he was of them. Nothing gave him more pride & joy than becoming a grandpa of his grandson Lukas (Schuman) - the sun rose and set on Lukas' arrival. He attended every special event of Lukas' life and when failing health made this impossible, he loved hearing each and every detail of Lukas' many adventures. Bob was a member of Faith Community Church in Fort Atkinson. Bob is survived by his wife Judy of Jefferson daughter Teri (Daniel) Schuman and grandson Lukas of Oregon, son Tim (Lynne) of Madison, special "daughter of the heart" Laurie Berendt of Jefferson and other relatives and friends. Per his request he asked that in lieu of plants or flowers donations to me made to the family to further his grandson's future education choices or a charity close to you. Memorial Services will be held at 1:00 PM at Schneider Michaelis Funeral Home at 900 West Racine Street Jefferson, Wisconsin with Rev. Dr. Kenneth Comstock officiating. Burial and full Military Honors Service will follow at Rock River Cemetery of Jefferson. Visitation will be from 11:00 AM to the time of the service. Special thanks to the staff of Rainbow Hospice Care, Fort Health Care Staff, Nursing/ Therapy Service Staff at Alden Estates and FHC-Home Health - you all show us that angels DO live among us.
