Obituary of Marjorie June Vogel

Marjorie J. Vogel "June" age 86 of Johnson Creek, found peace September 7, 2013. She was born on January 23, 1927 daughter of the late, Edward & Minnie J. (Melby) Wieler. She married Godfrey "Fritz" Vogel in November of 1955; he preceded her in death on August 19-8, 1983. June was known for her humor, generosity and friendliness making many friends during her residence in Johnson Creek. She had been employed at Johnson Controls for 35 years. After retirement, she enjoyed several summers in Hayward (where she spent her youth), and where she renewed old friendships and made new ones. As a member of St. Mary Magdalene, she served on the church council, taught Sunday School and worked with the Daughters of Mary. In 1990 June founded the annual free Christmas Day dinner with her sister-in-law & friend, Cora Olszewski. This was one of her passions and she collected donations, shopped and cooked with family and friends every Christmas Day for 20 yrs. At the end of 2010 June released the project to volunteers. In 2004, June and Cora were recognized for their community service by American Legion Post 305 in Johnson Creek. June was also an avid and astute card player, with sheepshead her favorite. In March 2011, June was diagnosed with incurable lymphoma with a prognosis of 9 months. Mark & Michelle Lemminger, knowing that one of her regrets was not obtaining a HS diploma, arranged with the Johnson Creek school board for her to receive one. She felt both gratitude and pride receiving this honor. June began chemotherapy, terminating it after a few months. She surprised her doctors and continued to live 1 3/4 years beyond their prediction. Throughout her diagnosis and treatment, June maintained hope combined with her sense of humor and work ethic. She continued to enjoy her time spent with family and friends. She will be dearly missed by her loving children: Rita Layton of Manchester, NH, Arthur (Linda Quest) Layton of Johnson Creek, Sharon Schrock of Johnson Creek, Fred Vogel of Johnson Creek, and "adopted" daughter Barbara Zubke of Watertown; brother, Raymond Steger of Racine, sister, Donna (David) Thome of Greendale; 9 grandchildren: Brian (Tina) and Scott Layton, Jay (Sherry) Layton, Mindy (Tom) Rue, Ryan Layton, Adam and Todd Sigmund, Sarah and Danielle Vogel and 10 great grandchildren; Sister-in-Laws; Cora (Syl) Olszewski, Virginia Hansen, Louise Vogel, Ursula Vogel, Minnie Vogel, 3 maternal aunts, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends. June was preceded in death by Godfrey Vogel, her husband of 28 yrs., her son, Robert Layton, daughter in law; Greta, Sister-in-law Sally Steger and her parents. A memorial mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday September 14, 2013 at St. Mary Magdalene church in Johnson Creek with the Rev. David Wainsh officiating, burial will follow in the Parish cemetery. Friends may gather at the church from 9:00a.m. until the time of Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
