Jamie, I just heard today about Joanne, and I am so sorry to hear of her passing. I took lessons and showed horses through Joanne from 1989 through 1996 or so. I will never forget her strength, wisdom, warmth, and love she shared with her students and horses. For some time she had me riding your horse (Acquainted) which are memories I still cherish. Through countless lessons, helping her stuff envelopes at the school with my mom (Toni Huick), and more weekends that I can even count spent hanging around the barn, I grew to view Joanne as a pillar that would always be there. I still think of her every time I walk on my patio and see the Saddlebred hose guide she gave me for Christmas one year back when I was still in high school. I could never thank her enough for the guidance, discipline, and memories she gave me over the years. Sorry for your loss, and all the best to you and your family.

My path crossed with Joanne not uncommonly—through the network of friends who knew her. My father, who at the time owned Fairway Builders of Janesville, met a lady named Ann Carroll while doing business. I had just recently started taking pony lessons and wanted to take horse lessons. Through casual conversation Ann mentioned that one of her best friends and riding partners gave lessons in Cambridge and told my dad to take me out for a lesson.
I started taking lessons with Joanne when I was about 11 or 12. I knew hardly anything about horses, all I knew was that I wanted to learn to ride. I also knew I didn't want anything to do with showing, but that all changed after taking a couple lessons with Joanne. She had me showing horses and enjoying it in no time. She had a passion that was hard to miss and her joy spread to all her students. As I got more comfortable with the lessons my once-a-week lesson turned in to twice-a-week then three times and then whenever I could get my dad to drive me out to the barn. As I became a teenage girl with all the teenage drama that goes with it, Joanne was my rock. She was not only my riding instructor but a mentor, a teacher and a grandmother figure. I don't believe that my passion for horses and riding would be as strong today without her coaching.
Joanne taught me a lot, not only about horses and riding but also about life, loss, accomplishment, disappointment and that you can do anything with a little hard work and faith. My life was shaped around her and I don't believe I would be the same person I am today without her influences in my life. She was such a big part of my childhood and teenage years all the way thought high school and my first boyfriends. It didn't matter what was going on in my life though because more than anything I loved being at the barn. Joanne had a way of making the barn not just somewhere you came and took lessons but somewhat of a home. It was a place that I could just go and be me. I can't think about my childhood and not see Joanne front and center. She was an amazing person, instructor and was great with the horses. She loved what she did and she was very good at it. And she loved her Mountain Dew; it was a rare occasion to see her without her big red mug.
Joanne had a love for trains as well as the horses and I remember many times on the way home from the barn we would stop and watch the trains pass when we came across them. Ever since she shared that interest with me I have always wanted to see a big steam engine train roll by. She made it sound so exciting. There are many memories I have with Joanne that I will never forget, they will stay with me and continue making me who I am. Unfortunately when I graduated from high school I moved to Utah for college and my times with Joanne became few. I will always remember her and she will always be in my heart. She was a guiding light and person to look up to. I am so thankful for her and that I was blessed enough to have her touch my life the way she did. She will always be missed. To Joanne's Family So sorry to hear of your loss. I knew your mother through IASPHA and from horse shows. She was a very classy lady with a wonderful smile for all and would even try to help the OTR competitor when she could. My sincere condolences.

Jamie, Sorry to hear about the passing of your mother. Denise and I always considered Joanne to be a great friend and lover of the American Saddlebred. When I was president of IASPHA I could always count on Joanne to support the assosiation in many ways. She will be missed greatly. I can picture her giving lessons to children and adults on an American Saddlebred in heaven.

To Joanne's Family; I worked with Joanne at the Milton Middle School for years. I was the custodian and Joanne was such a wonderful person. We would talk each day about everything from weather, to sports, to our sons and most of all our "pets." Her spirit, and smile were infectious and she always made my day. I know that life became hard for Joanne and I lost touch with her, but our friendship I knew "always" went on. You will be missed Joanne, but you are in a far better place, with less pain and I know you are riding in the sky and loving every minute of it. Love; Rhonda

Jamie-I am Ann Carroll's shirt-tail and I remember you when you were so young, and I got to share your mother's photos of you and your beautiful family that she had at Senior Living. I feel badly as I lost track of your mother after she left Milton Senior Living, and I tried so many times to reach her on her cell phone. My children took lessons from your mom through the Y, and we stayed closely connected through the years with she and Ann. We always admired her dedication to her horses and working with kids. I sold her home and visited her often in Milton, and I was amazed how well she adapted from being in the hospital when she was so badly injured, her stay at the Nursing Home in Delavan, and then her apartment at the Senior Living. It was very hard for her to lose Ann, and it was so unbelievable that her auto accident happened while she was caring for Ann, and we talked a lot about that over the years. They both were strong, successful ,hard working women who made a difference in so many lives. She will truly be remembered by those who knew her. We want to extend our deepest sympathy to you and your family. Elayne and Dwight Drenckpohl

Jamie-- When Margaret's father and I signed her up for a series of six riding lessons offered by the Janesville YWCA, little did we know we were embarking on a family adventure that would endure for several years. We remember your mother with affection and treasure the memories of many friendships formed through the horse connection. I last saw Joanne in the 1990s when I was working at UW Hospital in Madison and she was recovering from surgery there. I'm delighted to learn of your marriage and family and wish very much that I could share that "one last trip to the barn" on Saturday. Because of limitations on my driving following a life-threatening illness in 2008, I can't be there in person. Please know that you and your family are very much in my thoughts and prayers. I was so sorry to hear about Joanne's passing. I knew Joanne from the Milton School District. I was also a good friend of Ann Carroll's and got to know Joanne better through that connection. Joanne was a kind and caring person in and out of the classroom. She will be remembered with great fondness. Carol McGuire
