Grandma
Thank you all for coming today. It’s been great seeing everyone in Jefferson, for those that want to join us we are going to be at Gemuetlichkeit tomorrow, my son Mason will be defending my big wheel legacy. For those that didn’t know, I’m a former big wheel champion, no big deal. We couldn’t find my old lederhosen from when I was a kid in the costume competition, we looked, probably a good thing for Mason.
Grandma would be so happy. She loved it when we all came to visit. It’s weirdly fitting that we are here for Grandma this weekend of all weekends. You probably saw the pictures from previous Gemuetlichkeit’s, they had roller throws, costumes, helicopter rides, stein carrying, keg tosses. Now, Grandma didn’t throw any kegs, but some of the guys did, and for years it was a huge weekend for the family, and Grandma led the way. She’d be happy.
Grandma was born in Norway, Michigan, to a traditional Italian family, parents were Edith, who we called Nona, and Grandpa Joe Guizzetti. Nona maintained an excellent garden, was a wonderfully sassy, yet loving woman and Grandpa, a hard-working mason, was known for his terrazzo skills and had the best spaghetti and meatball recipe around. The not so secret ingredient of course, the bottle of burgundy he kept as a staple under the kitchen sink. I like making it, the meatballs, sauce and of course the cook get a healthy dose of red wine before it’s all done. They later moved to Green Bay to a house Grandpa Guizzetti built. They introduced us to family picnics, bocce games and gardening and the importance of family meals, where everyone helps prepare. One look in the mirror at our dark hair and big brown eyes reminds us who we came from. Among others, Easter Sundays at Nona’s house. I miss those trips.
I digressed a little because no story about Grandma is complete without her parents, and the house in Green Bay. She took care of them as they aged. They challenged her at times, but she loved them both very much. She was an excellent daughter, and an only child. Through them she developed her love of family, servant’s spirit, strong work ethic, and perhaps most of all, the dedication to helping other people.
Grandma was one of the nicest and most loving people I have ever met. She was humble and led by example. She helped many people during her selfless work as a Social Worker for Jefferson County Human Services helping people prepare for and find jobs, or her time with Grandpa, when upon retirement they volunteered through a program called FISH to drive other seniors wherever they need to go, appointments, grocery story, and so on. Grandma sang in the choir and would visit different communities with her dance troupe. She aimed to please, and she definitely succeeded.
If you ever visited my Grandma and Grandpa in Jefferson, you would know that Grandpa could cook, and Grandma was a tireless host. It was always a treat to visit. Both of them in their aprons, the kitchen would always be a hundred degrees with the different delicious foods they had going on the stove. Grandpa in his tee shirt doing his best to combat the heatwave with a headband, probably a relic from his younger athletic days. We would gather around the table in prayer and grandpa would serve everyone from his little table in the corner of the dining room. These dinners were always fun events, Grandpa made sure to always have plenty of material, some appropriate and some probably not. “Did you hear the one about little Johnny at school?” Ask me later. While this is going on, Grandma is running around, and probably never had a warm meal when we were in town because she was constantly in the kitchen and making sure everyone had what they needed. After dinner we would settle in for good conversation in the living room and a Jay Leno monologue before getting ready for bed. Funny what kids remember, but somehow we got to eat cereal every night before heading to our freshly made beds. Sure, it was weird old people cereal, (lots of bran) but it was a treat. And Grandma always made everything perfect, almost like our own turn-down service.
Grandma was the best listener. We always had great conversations. Whenever we would arrive in Jefferson, and unlike many families where the adults would talk, Grandma would always jump right in with me or Tim, and say “How’s school going?” Or “I hear you’re doing really well in soccer”, “How’s work?” She was always caught up and always wanted to hear from people, and she always seemed to know what was important to me.
She gave me great counsel and always supported me. When we were up north she loved to sit on the deck and just watch me chop wood. I would take a break and she would say, “Boy, you sure are good at that.” When I brought my now wife, Ashli, to meet Grandma for the first time, the conversation was so loving and kind, Ashli said, “I feel like she is my Grandma.” Shortly thereafter, I visited Grandma with only my Mom. Grandma said with a sparkle, “I really like Ashli” and we talked and then I knew what I had to do. She had that effect on people.
Graduating from Green Bay West High School, Grandma bled green and gold. She was a huge fan of the Packers and she knew her stuff. Grandma always knew the names of the players and teams, and who was doing well. She was an avid golfer and I fondly remember watching golf with her on those summer afternoons in Jefferson. We would go to church, this church, with Grandma, upon our return Grandpa would be rolling out brunch, once again kitchen a million degrees, tee shirt and headband intact. After that we would all relax in the living room, invariably, golf or football would be on. Grandma and Grandpa in their recliners, and they had this fun, kind of weird, but super comfortable spinning chair in the front by the TV, that I got to use. We would spend the afternoon together as a family watching games. A little-known fact is that Grandma cheered the Cubs on and was very happy when the Cubs won the World Series. I don’t know if she had a passion for the Cubs any more than the Brewers, I never asked. But I do know that she was cheering for the Cubs because she was happy I was happy, and she was especially happy for her son, Uncle Jim, who lives and breathes Cubs baseball. She would have loved the playoff race going on right now. And for sure that Packers game the other night.
I want to thank Aunt Sandy and Uncle Jon for your support of Grandma over the years. I can never thank you enough, I hope I get the chance. You took care of my Grandma and made her happy and comfortable. Then, we got a chance earlier this year to visit and say good bye to Grandma in Prescott Valley. I am left with much peace that she was able to spend the end of her life in such a beautiful place, with such caring people. Thank you.
Moving to Arizona was another adventure for her. Grandma loved to fly. She always loved traveling with Grandpa and whenever they flew together they would hold each other’s hands during takeoff and landing. She travelled to San Francisco, Cancun and Alaska, one of several cruises. There were countless family road trips and day trips to Okauchee Lake. Before cars had radios, Grandma would lead the family in song, while Uncle Jim and Bruce were laying in the back of the station wagon, apparently seatbelts weren’t a trend yet either. Grandpa would sing goofy, no doubt.
And of course, their trips to the casinos. I used to love getting casino updates from Grandma, she loved playing the slots. And some of my earliest memories of us would be playing blackjack at the kitchen table in Jefferson. Dinner would be cleaned up and the cards would be dealt. Grandma and Grandpa would teach us the ins and outs of blackjack. In the beginning, I couldn’t have been more than 7 or 8 at the time, and we changed in $1 for chips. Grandma would always counsel us to bet steady and it will pay off, I listened. But my brother Tim would eventually get bored and bet the house max, win big or lose it all fast. He did pretty well. Grandpa would warn us, with that mischievous grin, that in Vegas if you put your cards under the table or cheat they would chop off your hands. We all laughed, although for years I was convinced this was true.
Finally, and most importantly, Grandma was a deeply religious woman, learned from her mother, Nona. Grandma trusted God and prayed for everyone she knew, especially her children and grandchildren. They prayed to specific saints depending on what you needed. For example, if you lost something you prayed to St. Jude, the Patron Saint of Lost Causes. Because of Grandma and my Mom, I didn’t even have to look it up. Throughout her 90 years, she spent many sleepless nights kneeling next to her bed. Praying for safety and guidance for those she held dear. When my brother Tim passed away, we received so much support and love. But in those confusing days, I specifically remember Grandma being there for me. I sat next to her at the wake and held her hand. I felt peace.
My happy thought out of this, besides all of the really good years we had with Grandma, and quality health years that not everyone gets these days, is that she is reuniting with Grandpa, they were a great couple together. I think about Grandpa often. I see both of their influence in myself. And I miss him terribly. At my wedding, I danced with Grandma to their song, I took Grandpa’s place. But now I like to think of them reunited, dancing together, she always said that it was his dancing that caught her eye.
I love you Grandma and I will miss you always. Thank you.
