Obituary of Janice Evelyn Quale

JANICE E. (MERO) QUALE, 70 of Fort Atkinson formerly of Jefferson died Friday February 29. 2008 at Abilities Inc. (Blue Raven Unit) in Fort Atkinson where she had resided for several months. She was born in August of 1937 in Ashland Wisconsin to Sanford G and Esther (Hermann) Mero. The family moved to Livingston, where Jan started her first years of education. After the death of her father and grandfather she and her mother moved to Jefferson where Jan continued her schooling and graduated from Jefferson High School with the Class of 1955. After High School she worked in Milwaukee as a telephone operator. In May of 1958 she graduated from Madison Area Technical College and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. During the years she worked in nursing she worked at Countryside Home, Fort Atkinson Hospital, Madison General Hospital (Meriter) and Beverly Terrace Nursing Home. On February 11, 1961 she married Paul Quale of Jefferson at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Jefferson they later divorced. In 1975 she graduated from MATC in Watertown in the Account Clerk Program and then worked in a secretarial position with the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in Madison for a few months. In 1987 she graduated from the Kettle Moraine Hospital as a Chemical Dependency Counselor trainee. She then worked as a coordinator for the Jefferson Women Reaching Women Program (now PADA) for several years until medical problems caused her to retire from working. In 1995 she suffered two strokes which left her legally blind and with permanent speech impediment. Jan obtained a black lab guide dog named "Moe". They were seen together many places in the area. She and Moe resided for many years with longtime companion, Bob Quale. After Bob passed away she and Moe moved into an apartment in Fort Atkinson for several years. It was here that her Moe passed away. Major operations and medical problems continued for Jan. After a couple of falls, it was determined that it was not safe for her to live alone so she moved to Abilities Inc (Blue Raven Unit) where she was residing at the time of her death. Survivors include a brother Robert (Judy) Mero of Jefferson A niece Teri (Dan) Schuman and grandnephew Lukas B. Schuman of Oregon, Nephews Tim (Lynne) Mero of Madison, Mike Kenny of Germantown, Mark (Pam) Kenny and family of Dodgeville Cousin Randy "Doc" Clark and family of Fort Atkinson And George (Linda) Jatzo and family of Iron River WI Other friends and relatives. Jan was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Julie Ann Quale (at birth) a brother James Mero (7-22-07) a sister and brother -in-law Anne (Donald) Kenny, a niece Julie Kay Kenny, a nephew Matt Kenny, several aunts and uncles, Her faithful guide dog "Moe" and a longtime companion Bob Quale. Memorial services for Jan will be held at the Schneider-Michaelis Funeral home 900 West Racine St. Jefferson at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday March 29, 2008 with the Rev. Thomas Coyle officiating. The family will meet with friends and relatives from 12:00 noon on Saturday until the time of services. Jan's cremains will be interred in the family grave site at Rock Church Cemetery rural Livingston WI at a later date. The family suggests in lieu of flowers that memorials in Jan's name be made to Jefferson Rainbow Hospice, Tomorrow's Hope or a charity of one's choice Schneider-Michaelis Funeral Home in Jefferson is assisting the family with arrangements.
