Obituary of Gerald Earl Kraus

Gerald E. “Jerry” Kraus, 77, of Helenville passed away unexpectedly at his home on May 18, 2024.

Jerry was born on February 23, 1947, in Watertown, son of the late Eleanor (Hake) and Wallace Kraus. He was the 5th of 12 children. Jerry grew up on his family’s farm in Helenville. He attended St. Lawrence Catholic School in Jefferson through 8th grade. After graduating from St. Lawrence, Jerry attended Jefferson High School and graduated in 1966. Jerry married Sharon Strauss (of Aztalan) on July 9, 1977, at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Johnson Creek. Together they had 3 children.

Jerry served in the Army National Guard from 1966-1972. He was employed at Creamery Package in Fort Atkinson while also continuing to help his dad on the family farm. He then went on to work at Silgan Containers (formerly Carnation) in Oconomowoc until his retirement in 2006 after 39 years. Jerry was a very hard worker. In addition to working at the factory, Jerry was managing and keeping up with his family farm, eventually going on to raise beef cattle and farming cash crops.

Jerry was a beloved husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He is remembered for his strong work ethic, kindness, honesty, willingness to help others, and always putting family needs before his own. Jerry enjoyed attending and hosting thresherees, driving his tractors in parades and attending tractor shows, fixing up and driving his 1931 Model A Ford, going to haunted houses with his family, collecting antique tractors, and taking “day trips” with his wife. Jerry had a love of planes and even went so far as to complete training to become a pilot. He also volunteered as an usher at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, where he was a lifelong member. He was a proud grandpa and enjoyed every moment with his grandchildren, especially giving Gator rides, spending time up north, and attending all of their school and sporting events.

Jerry will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Sharon, of 46 years; his daughters Deborah (Seth) Ebel of Jefferson, Rebekah (Andrew) Barrette of Hales Corners, and Elizabeth (Andrew) Palmini of Wausau; and cherished grandchildren Ellie, Joseph, and Henry Ebel, Peter and Callen Barrette, and Maxton Palmini. He is further survived by his siblings Don (Joanne) Kraus of Jefferson, Carol (Jim) Gilbert of Sullivan, Theresa Gutheridge of Lake Mills, Pat Hutson of Helenville, Steve Kraus of Jefferson, Tim (Patty) Kraus of Whitewater, and Kris Kraus (Dennis Nelson) of Watertown as well as many other relatives and friends.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Wallace and Eleanor Kraus; siblings MaryAnn Lohneis, Robert “Bobby” Kraus, Mike Kraus, and Diane Raasch; father-in-law Robert Strauss, and mothers-in-law Eunice (Ortwig) Strauss and Lois (Lemberger) Strauss.

Jerry’s legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched and in the family farmland he loved. Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 am on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Jefferson with the Rev. Thomas Coyle officiating. A visitation will be held from 9 am until the time of mass. Following the service, burial will take place in the parish cemetery with lunch to follow at St. Lawrence School.

The family would like to give a special “Thank You” to the Jefferson Sheriff’s Department (Peter Betanski), Jefferson EMS, Helenville First Responders/Fire and Jefferson Fire Department.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Jerry’s name can be made out to St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Jefferson.
