Obituary of James A. 'Jim' Best

JAMES A. ‘JIM’ BEST, 81 of Johnson Creek, WI died of natural causes in Watertown, WI on May 10, 2024. 

He was born on February 1,1943 to Milton and Josephine (Dubcek) Best in Milwaukee, WI.  Jim attended Lincoln Elementary School in West Allis, WI and graduated from Central High School.  He furthered his education at UW-Stevens Point (BS), University of Iowa and UW-Whitewater (MS). 

Jim married Virginia (Ginger) Clay on June 10, 1967.  He was a science teacher at Johnson Creek High School for 15 years. During that time, he also served as Athletic Director and coached football and basketball. He then worked for the food wholesale company Godfrey/Fleming for 15 years retiring in 2003. 

Jim belonged to several organizations; his college fraternity was Tau Kappa Epsilon, in the Village of Johnson Creek he served many years on the Plan Commission, as a Village Trustee and as President of the Village Board.  He was a member of the first class of Johnson Creek EMTs and actively participated in the fundraising drive to purchase the Village’s first ambulance. 

Jim served on the Parish Council of St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, where he also served as a lector.  He was also a member of the Johnson Creek Senior Circle. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, traveling, coaching young people and playing cards with friends. 

He is survived by his wife, Ginger; sons, James Clay Best, Aaron Patrick (Becky) Best and Peter Luke (Holly) Best; grandchildren, Megan, Lauren, Nathaniel, Matthew, Caius, Noah and Oliver Best. Jim is further survived by sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Susan (the late Douglas) Cox and Kathleen and Neil Coulthurst. 

Jim is predeceased by his parents and sister Barbara Faye Best. 

A visitation will be held on Friday, May 17, 2024 at Schneider-Michaelis Funeral Home from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at 11:00 AM with visitation at St. Mary Magdalene in Johnson Creek from 10:00 AM until time of service.  Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. 

Memorials may be made to the National Diabetes Foundation or St. Mary Magdalene Church.
