First Friday working at the old Jefferson County Bank (circa 10/1995) when I heard a very loud commotion in the lobby. First rule, get the person into an office to defuse the issue. Moving quickly out of my office, I went to see our head teller, Denise Lange, who calmly informed me that there was no problem, just Jerry being very happy that his check book balanced to the Bank’s balance . Never before had I heard ‘zippy ta do da’ said with such enthusiasm!

I was was fortunate to get to know Gerry. I had a shoe store in downtown Jefferson for 40 years, and he came there many times. I remember a special time when he got his cowboy boots. My sympathy to all of his friends and family, Judy Waldmann

Following my retirement at age 62, I worked at Jefferson County Fair Park for 8-1/2 years. Gerry was a frequent visitor at fair events, especially those related to horses. He believed in "up close and personal", so much so, that I once cautioned him against standing too close to the dangerous backside of a show-horse while it is raising its tail to answer nature's call.
Gerry always could quote the current daily market value of precious metals, especially copper. We saved copper wire for him.
Once, while I waited in the food ordering line at a fair event, I'd achieved the head of the line, and as I stated my order, Gerry popped-up next to me and in a cheerful voice, announced to the order-taker, "Nineteen thirty-seven". As he walked off, the confused order-taker asked me what that was all about. I had noticed Gerry briefly glancing at the menu posted below the order window. I added the prices, top-to-bottom and came up with a total of $19.37! When I explained what Gerry had meant, the order-taker shrugged her shoulders and gave me a bewildered look.
In the years since leaving fair park employment, I've seldom seen Gerry, but often wondered how he had fared. He had been born in 1942; the same year as I had. The world without Gerry will be an emptier, less cheerful place. His joyful presence and contagious good humor will be sadly missed. Heaven with Gerry will be an even happier place. Farewell, old and beloved friend.
